University of British Columbia will form a Women's softball team for the 2008-09 school year, initially playing as a club team and progressing to full varsity status in 2009-10. We are seeking candidates for the position of head coach for a one year term commencing in March 2008. This is a part-time position initially, and may become full-time the following year. The team will commence training this fall and will play an exhibition spring schedule. The Thunderbirds will play in the NAIA or NCAA Division II in 2009-10, pending a decision to apply for NCAA status by the university. We are looking for a head coach who has experience in the areas of recruiting and team development, as well as demonstrated results in team performance. This position will report to the Friends of UBC Softball Society in the first year. The position will be funded by the university in 2009-10 and beyond.

Phil Thom announced as UBC Club Softball coach
For release, Sunday, March 09, 2008
Former Surrey Storm coach, Phil Thom has been named Head Softball coach for the UBC Club team for the upcoming 2008-09 season by the Friends of UBC Softball Society.
The club softball team is being launched as a one year program by the Society prior to the commencement of the Varsity softball team for the 2009-2010 season. That team will play a full schedule in either the NAIA or NCAA Division II if UBC decides to pursue an application for membership in the NCAA this spring.
Thom has a long and successful record with the Surrey Storm organization and his most recent team, Storm 90 won the Canadian National Championships as a Bantam team in 2006, and last year finished third in the Midget Nationals as a first year team after winning the BC Provincials. His teams won Softball BC "Minor Team of the Year" in both 1997 and 2006.
He has been involved with Team BC as an associate or assistant coach since 1995, working the tryout camps for selection to Western Canada and Canada Summer Games. In the summer of 2006, he was invited to be a guest coach to help in the selection of players for the Canadian National Junior team to participate in the World Junior Championships.
Friends of UBC Softball spokesperson, Rick O'Connor said they were thrilled to have a National Championship caliber coach guide the UBC Club program in 2008-09. "Phil has a very good reputation amongst the players and has a track record of success with many different teams over the past ten years. We feel he will help get the program ready for varsity status over the next year."
In addition to his Minor softball coaching achievements, Phil has coached teams in the prestigious Canada Cup Women's tournament, beginning in 1998 with the South Hill Selects.
Phil is married and has two adult children and lives in Richmond, B.C.
